At Sequence Wellness, our naturopathic doctors see a wide range of patients. Some of these patients are very well informed and well researched, and essentially using us as access points to private lab testing, which is totally fine by us. It’s their body, and we believe that they should have access to information about it, with less gatekeeping on the part of the practitioner. We do make sure to do our best to inform them of the utility of some of the testing, and steer them away from testing that will be a waste of their time and money, as well as point out which tests are truly warranted. But ultimately it is the patient’s choice as to what they would like to be tested.
The other type of patient that we see are the ones completely lost in a sea of online medical information. They show up wondering if they fit the diagnosis of perimenopause, or is it that their pms is just getting worse? Do they have PCOS, or is there something else causing their irregular periods? Do they have ADHD or are they just overwhelmed in life?
Naturopathic doctors are medically trained researchers that are constantly screening for health conditions. On the surface we are casually asking you about your day, your stress, your diet. But underneath we are pulling out mini clues that help us narrow down your diagnosis. It’s like a game of Plinko, where the plethora of potential diagnoses gets steadily narrowed down to a remaining few, for which we need to complete some lab testing to finally confirm.
We have created some free online self tests that allow potential patients to self screen for common conditions that we see. Just a little tool to point them in the right direction. These are not diagnostic by any means, but can help get the right questions front of mind.
