Understanding PCOS: A Comprehensive Approach to Your Health
Understanding PCOS
Natural solutions for PCOS are achievable if the root cause is known. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex and often misunderstood hormonal and metabolic condition. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the endless information and advice online, you’re not alone. The journey to understanding and managing PCOS can be daunting, but with the right guidance and personalized care, you can find clarity and relief.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a constellation of symptoms and requires at least 2 of the 3 following symptoms to be considered for the diagnosis:
- Irregular menstrual cycles, >35 days in length.
- Cysts on the ovaries (12 or more follicles visible on ultrasound)
- Signs of high androgen levels, such as acne, excess hair growth, and hair loss, which may or may not be seen on blood work
Having two out of the three symptoms does not automatically give you the diagnosis of PCOS because you must also eliminate other possible conditions that can present similarly. These include:
- Hyperprolactinemia
- Hypothyroidism
- Hypothalamic amenorrhea
- Non-congenital adrenal hyperplasia
- Premature ovarian insufficiency
- Post-pill cycle changes
Once the diagnosis is made, we need to figure out the driving cause(s) for you.
Common Underlying Causes of PCOS
Although not fully understood, there seems to be a miscommunication between the hormones in the brain (GnRH) and ovaries (LH/FSH) that is driven by:
- Insulin resistance & blood sugar imbalances
- High testosterone
- Physical and mental stress
- Inflammation
- Genetics
Determining which of these are a part of your picture is critical to create a unique treatment plan that will work for you.
Common Myths Surrounding PCOS
Birth Control Will Regulate Your Cycle
While birth control pills can help manage menstrual cycle irregularities and unwanted symptoms, they do not address the root causes of PCOS. Without changes to diet and lifestyle, the underlying issues will persist once you stop taking the pill.
You Will Struggle with Fertility
While PCOS can impact fertility, it is important to know that many individuals with PCOS can and do get pregnant with the right approach.
PCOS is Just a Fertility Concern
Often, if fertility isn’t your goal, you may not be offered additional treatments. However, those with PCOS can struggle with a range of other concerns, including fatigue, anxiety, depression, high cholesterol, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, high blood pressure, and endometriosis, which all deserve to be investigated and treated.
Where to Start When Treating PCOS?
A comprehensive intake and lab work is foundational when addressing PCOS.
Once we understand the timeline, the underlying drivers of your PCOS, and your long-term health goals, we can create a plan that incorporates sustainable nutrition and lifestyle adjustments, alongside strategic supplementation.
There is no shame in utilizing conventional treatment options. I just want you to know what else is available and will create a plan that complements conventional care.
