How I Became a Naturopathic Doctor
Research and connection.
Becoming a naturopathic doctor was an inevitable path for me. I took steps along the way to ensure that I would be an effective science-based doctor, and created a career for myself that is fulfilling and based in human connection.
My Story
At university, I pursued both my undergraduate and master’s degrees in nutrition science — an area I was genuinely passionate about, and one I knew would serve as a strong foundation for my future as an ND. While I loved science, biology, and research, I’ve always been equally drawn to working with people. Every part-time job I held was customer-service oriented, and I thrived in roles that allowed for meaningful, human connection. I knew I wanted a career where I could truly listen, build relationships, and support people in a way that went far beyond surface-level interactions.
Because naturopathic medicine is often held to a higher level of scrutiny, I made it a priority to ground my practice in evidence-based care while still honoring the art of natural medicine. During my master’s degree, I refined my research skills and dedicated my thesis to IBS — an area that continues to shape my clinical focus today. With over 10 years of post-secondary education, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for lifelong learning and remain committed to continually updating my knowledge as research and treatments evolve. In 2021, I had the opportunity to train under Dr. Goulding, founder of Sequence Wellness, whose mentorship and experience greatly influenced my approach to practice. I also learn constantly from my patients, who often introduce me to new perspectives, tools, and emerging trends.
One of my favourite aspects of being a naturopathic doctor is being my own science experiment. I enjoy trialing new tests, supplements, and nutrition strategies myself – because if it’s something I wouldn’t feel comfortable using personally, I wouldn’t recommend it to a patient. My non-negotiables for my own health are lifting heavy in the gym, cooking high protein and fiberous meals, and getting outside every day (having a Husky-German Shepherd really helps). I am also a big believer in doing my own comprehensive set of labs annually, because I am a health detective to myself just as much as I am to my patients.
Over time, one of my biggest realizations in practice has been the importance of staying open-minded. A person’s lived experience in their body is often more informative than any single appointment or lab result. Creating a safe space where patients feel heard, believed, and supported is something I deeply value. I never want anyone to feel dismissed or hesitant to speak honestly about their symptoms or experiences.
I truly can’t imagine a more aligned career path. I love what I do — a profession that allows me to help others, apply my love of science and research, and practice what I preach every day. Being able to support people in improving their health is incredibly rewarding, and I’m deeply grateful to do this work in a way that feels authentic, meaningful, and fulfilling.
